Association of Southeast Asian Nations +3 (ASEAN+3)
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was formed in 1967 by Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore. Originally formed to counter Vietnam's Communist regime, ASEAN now concentrates on developing economic ties and has been working towards free trade agreements between its member states. The Republic of Korea, Japan and the People's Republic of China constitute the additional three countries along with the ten member states of ASEAN to make ASEAN +3. This organization addresses several key issues affecting the region including drug trafficking, illiteracy, and economic development.
