Committees

Dear Delegates,

As the USG of Committees this year, it is my privilege to introduce you to the committees for CAHSMUN 2010. Once again, the committees will be divided into General Assemblies and Regional and Specialized Agencies. It is generally recommended that delegates new to Model United Nations select a General Assembly committee, while more experienced delegates choose the more specialized committees. Delegates will find that the General Assemblies are larger and cover broader topics, allowing room for creativity and expansion, while the Regional committees focus on specific issues, often in specific areas, that require a great deal of research and diplomatic experience. Regardless of which committee you decide to choose, be sure that the committee deals with matters that you are highly interested in and willing to debate with other delegates about.

The committees together cover many topics highly relevant to the United Nations, ranging from pressing new crises to traditional age-old disagreements. The General Assemblies this year are the WHO, ECOSOC, UNDP, and UNEP, which explore issues pertaining to global health, economic stability, humanitarian development and environmental concerns respectively. The Regional and Specialized Assemblies are the UNSC, ASEAN+3, NATO, and the USNSC. The UNSC and NATO both primarily deal with military concerns, while ASEAN and the USNSC will focus on regional disputes. There will be two topics for each committee, with a few unexpected crises thrown in throughout committee sessions that will challenge your ability to respond quickly and decisively.

To ensure the best possible conference experience, I urge each and every one of you to do as much preparation as you can before attending the conference. To assist you with this task, background guides for each topic will be posted online before the conference. If you are in a MUN club or on the debate team, feel free to discuss a few of the topics with others from your organization. Thorough research into each topic and your country’s foreign affairs policies are expected of each delegate. A position paper, while only mandatory for some of the committees, would greatly help in preparing you for the conference. Reviewing the rules of procedure and maybe even chatting with some of the other delegates in your committee will also add to your conference experience.

I wish you the best of luck in your conference preparation and promise you that CAHSMUN 2010 will be a conference to remember! If you have any queries concerning the committees, please do not hesitate to email me at committees@cahsmun.org.

Sincerely,
Andy Lee
