Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

The United Nations Economic and Social Council is the principal organ for coordinating economic and social work of all other related specialized agencies and commissions. International economic and social issues are discussed here. The mandate of ECOSOC includes promoting higher standards of living, identifying solutions to economic and social problems, facilitating international cooperation, and encouraging global respect for human rights and freedoms. The exceedingly broad mandate of the Council explains its use of over 70% of all UN human and financial resources. ECOSOC has the power to initiate studies and reports, assist the preparations of major international economic and social conferences, and facilitate a coordinated follow-up to these conferences.
